Setting up WordPress locally on your computer (localhost) allows you to build and test a website before moving it to a live server. Here's a step-by-step guide to setting up WordPress on localhost:

Prerequisites
You’ll need a local server environment that includes:

PHP (for running WordPress scripts)
MySQL/MariaDB (for database management)
Apache or Nginx (as the server)
You can easily set up all these using software like:

XAMPP (Windows, macOS, Linux)
MAMP (macOS, Windows)
WAMP (Windows)
Steps for Setting up WordPress Locally
1. Install XAMPP/WAMP/MAMP
Download and Install:
Download XAMPP from Apache Friends or WAMP/MAMP from their respective sites.
Install the software, then launch it.
2. Start Apache and MySQL
After installing XAMPP/WAMP/MAMP, open the control panel.
Start Apache and MySQL:
These are necessary for running WordPress locally.
If the ports conflict with other software, you might need to change them (e.g., from port 80 to 8080).
3. Download WordPress
Go to the official WordPress website.

Download the ZIP file.

Extract the ZIP file to the htdocs folder (for XAMPP) or the equivalent folder in WAMP/MAMP (usually www).

For XAMPP, the directory is typically C:\xampp\htdocs.
Create a new folder inside htdocs (e.g., C:\xampp\htdocs\wordpress).
4. Create a MySQL Database
Open your browser and go to http://localhost/phpmyadmin.
In phpMyAdmin:
Click Databases at the top.
Enter a name for your database (e.g., wordpress_local).
Click Create.
5. Configure WordPress
In your browser, navigate to http://localhost/wordpress (or the name of the folder where you extracted WordPress).

WordPress will prompt you to set up the configuration file. Click Let's go!.

Enter the following database details:

Database Name: The name you created (e.g., wordpress_local).
Username: root (for XAMPP/MAMP/WAMP; unless you changed it).
Password: Leave blank (for XAMPP, unless you set one).
Database Host: localhost.
Table Prefix: wp_ (default, or change if needed).
Click Submit.

6. Complete the Installation
WordPress will now guide you through the installation process.
Set your Site Title, Username, Password, and Email.
You can also choose whether to make the site visible to search engines (this is mostly irrelevant for localhost but can be set for future use).
Click Install WordPress.
7. Log in to Your Local WordPress Site
After installation, you'll see a success message.
Go to http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin to log in with the credentials you set during installation.
Now, you can start building and customizing your WordPress website locally!
